 THE GREATEST OF THE GREATER SINS IS TO ATTRIBUTE PARTNERS TO ALLAH

Allah tells us in Qur'an:

“Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases, and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin.”

[Surah an-Nisa’ 4:48]

.....

Indeed shirk is the greatest oppression." [Luqman 31: 13]

وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ

.....

“And worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him.”
(Surah an-Nisa’ 4:36)

And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.
[Al-Zumar 39:65]

The Prophet (صلي الله عليه وسلم) saught refuge from shirk and taught us a du’a to protect ourselves:

O Allah, I ask for Your protection for making shirk with You while I know and I ask for Your forgiveness for what I do not know.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ

Allaahumma innee a‛oodhu bika an ushrika bika wa ana a‛lamu, wa astaghfiruka li maa laa a‛lam

[Ahmad 4/403]

Anas (radhi Allahu anhu) said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (sall Allahu alayhi wasallam) say: “Allah the Exalted said:

“O son of Adam! As long as you invoke Me and plead to Me, I will forgive you whatever you have committed, and I will not make much of it.

O son of Adam! If your evil deeds reach the borders of the sky, and then you ask Me for forgiveness, I will forgive you.

O son of Adam! If you bring forth the earth full of errors, then you meet Me while you do not associate anything (or anyone) with Me, I will bring forth for you its full of forgiveness.”
